About AirTran Airways

AirTran Airlines History

AirTran Airways used to offer low fares on every seat, on all flights, every day. Named in 2001 as “the best airline for economic fares” by Entrepreneur magazine , AirTran Airways offers low fares to its air destination throughout the east and center of the United States .

AirTran Airways offers you amenities such as Executive Class, frequent flyer program and assigned seats. AirTran Airways is the first airline that has Boeing 717 aircraft, the most modern commercial aircraft.

Few Restrictions
We will never do it on a Saturday night – or any other night. Moreover, it is not necessary to buy a round ticket to get our low fares.

Executive Class
AirTran Airways offers you the first and only economic Executive Class in the country. Seats placed two at a time give you 7 inches more legroom and 4 inches more on each seat. We even offer you two free drinks. Who could ask for more? All this for only $ 35 more than the economy class (class Y) ($ 70 on connecting flights)

Frequent flyer program: A-Plus Rewards
Our frequent flyer program is unique. You only have to travel 3 times (round trip) in Executive Class, or 6 times in economy class to get a free round ticket to any city where we fly. Or if you travel 6 times (round trip) in executive class or 12 times in ecomomic class, you will be eligible to receive a free round trip in economy class in one of 14 airlines to any destination in the continental United States.

Building one of the youngest aircraft fleets in America
The Boeing 717 aircraft was created with the passenger in mind, resulting today in an aircraft that is comfortable, quiet and modern. It offers you more headroom, a cleaner and quieter engine, larger compartments for hand luggage, 100% fresh air circulating throughout the cabin and more seats in the aisles and windows (which means there are less middle seats). When our order is completed with Boeing, AirTran Airways will have one of the youngest aircraft fleets in the country.

Traveling with AirTran Airways

At the Airport

How early should I arrive at the airport?
AirTran Airways recommends passengers check in at least 60 minutes prior to their scheduled departure. Customers presenting themselves at the AirTran Airways gate less than ten minutes before scheduled departure will be considered a “no show” and will forfeit their reservation. If so, AirTran Airways will not be responsible for denied boarding compensation.

In Atlanta, please note that on Monday mornings the security lines are longer than usual, and you may wish to arrive at the airport early. During peak Monday morning travel times, proceeding through airport security screening can take as long as an hour and a half.

If you plan to check baggage, due to additional TSA screening requirements, we recommend arriving at the airport 60-90 minutes before departure. Baggage cannot be accepted in larger airports less than 45 minutes prior to departure. Most smaller airports can accept checked luggage up to 30 minutes prior to departure.

What type of identification do I need to bring to the airport?
All passengers will be required to present a reservations receipt or a boarding pass, along with a valid, government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver’s license or passport) at the security checkpoint in order to proceed to the departure gate. Children under the age of 18 traveling with their parents are not required to provide identification.

Travel to and from Grand Bahama Island is considered international travel. All passengers will be required to present a passport or other acceptable identification. In place of a current passport, United States Citizens and nationals may present a valid, government-issued photo ID along with one of the following: a U.S. passport expired up to 5 years, an original birth certificate with raised seal or a certified copy of the original, or a naturalization certificate. Some states no longer issue birth certificates with raised seals. If you find that is the case, please ask the issuing agency for a letter explaining that. The name on the documents presented must match the name on the travel reservation.

If you are not a citizen or national of the United States and have questions regarding document requirements for travel to and from Grand Bahama Island, please call us at 1-800-AIR-TRAN.

If a passenger does not have a reservations receipt, the passenger must go to the airport ticket counter to check-in and get a boarding pass in order to proceed through the security checkpoint.

Can I proceed to the gate with my child who will be flying alone? How do I pick up an unescorted minor arriving at the airport?
You may proceed to the gate with unaccompanied minors, or pick up an unaccompanied minor arriving at the airport, by obtaining a gate pass at the ticket counter. In order to obtain a gate pass, the reservation record must be documented with the customer’s name by a reservationist at the time of booking, indicating a gate pass will be needed.

Please allow enough time before departure or arrival to obtain the gate pass.

What if I have lost my reservations receipt?
If you have lost your reservations receipt, please call our reservation center and an agent can fax a copy of your confirmed itinerary receipt to you. Bring this receipt with you to the airport, along with positive ID, to checkin and proceed through the security checkpoint.

Inflight Service

Do you have first class?
Ours is a Business Class any business can afford. You’ll get 7 inches more legroom than you would in coach, and a much wider seat too, since our Business Class seating is 2-across, like first class on other airlines. This means plenty of room to open your briefcase and spread out, or to work on your laptop without sharing the information on the screen with the person next to you. In addition to soft drinks and snacks, you receive two complimentary alcoholic beverages.

Business Class upgrades are available in advance at the airport on the day of your flight, from just $35 to $75 over our very affordable full coach fare (Y class) or from $70 to $120 on connecting flights. They are not available for use with discounted fares. Please visit our Business Class page for full details on upgrades.

Currently, as a special promotion, for the amounts listed above, you may upgrade from any fare class on a first come, first served basis, upon checking in for travel.

Does AirTran Airways provide inflight entertainment?
AirTran Airways has selected XM Satellite Radio as the airline’s new inflight entertainment system. With XM Satellite Radio, AirTran Airways will provide its passengers with over 100 digital channels of choice. The service will be free for all passengers and will be available in early 2005. For the best XM experience, bring your own high-quality headset.

Can I bring my pet on the flight?
We accept small, domesticated dogs, cats and birds that will fit in an approved carrier under the seat. This would mean no larger than 10″ high X 11″ long X 21″ wide for travel on our Boeing 717. The weight of the pet plus carrier cannot exceed 15 pounds or roughly 7 kilos.

Airfare for a pet is $65.00 one-way.

If you are traveling to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, the regulations are stricter. AirTran Airways transports only domesticated dogs and cats (birds are not permitted) in the passenger cabin of the aircraft to/from Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas. In order to transport a dog or cat to the Bahamas, you must have the following documents in your possession at departure:

  • Bahamas Ministry of Agriculture Permit. To obtain this permit, please contact the Bahamas Ministry Agriculture at 242-352-2144. The permit is $15.00. This permit must be presented to Bahamian Customs upon entry to the country.
  • Health certificate obtained from a veterinarian within 24 hours of departure (this is separate from the above-mentioned permit). If the health certificate expires prior to your return flight, the cat/dog will need to be examined by a veterinarian in the Bahamas to obtain a new health certificate.

What type of fleet does AirTran Airways use?
AirTran Airways utilizes state-of-the-art Boeing 717 and Boeing 737 jets.

Does AirTran Airways serve meals on flights?
AirTran Airways is a low fare carrier. In an effort to control our costs and provide low fares to our customers, we do not serve meals on our flights. We serve complimentary coffee, juices, Coca-Cola products and snacks on all flights. Cocktails, beer and wine are $4 on all flights.

Does AirTran Airways accept cash for drink purchases during the flight?
AirTran Airways is a cashless airline and does not accept cash for onboard purchases. If you wish to purchase cocktails, beer or wine during your flight, we ask that you pay with a credit or debit card carrying an American Express, MasterCard or Visa logo. AirTran continues to serve soft drinks free of charge.

Does AirTran Airways allow smoking on flights?
NO SMOKING: Per federal law, smoking is prohibited on all AirTran Airways flights.

Infants and children

Can I purchase one ticket for my child and me?
One child over 14 days and under two (2) years of age, not occupying a seat, may be held in the lap, free of charge with a customer paying the applicable adult fare. A birth certificate may be required to validate the age of all children under the age of two.

What are your policies for unaccompanied children traveling?
Children must be at least (5) years of age to travel unaccompanied, and may do so on any flight that carries them directly to their destinations without a change of aircraft. Any children at least eight (8) years of age may travel unaccompanied, even if their itinerary involves a change of aircraft. Unaccompanied minors will not be accepted on the last flight of the day.

Each unaccompanied child travels at the regular adult airfare plus an unaccompanied minor charge of $25 for nonstop flights and $40 for connecting flights each way. When making reservations, please advise the reservation agent that the booking is for an unaccompanied child. Parent must provide information regarding who will be dropping off and who will be picking up the child at the airport.

To ensure a pleasant travel experience, AirTran Airways asks that you have the unaccompanied child check in at the departure gate at least 1 hour prior to departure. The child will be courtesy boarded and identified to the flight attendant as an unaccompanied child. Those unaccompanied children arriving too late to be courtesy boarded will be boarded last to ensure identification to the flight attendant. The child will be escorted off the aircraft by a flight attendant and released to the designee or another designated AirTran Airways employee. AirTran Airways will require the party picking up the unaccompanied child to produce positive identification and sign a release.

Baggage questions

What are your policies for carry on and checked baggage?
All customers traveling on AirTran Airways will be restricted to one carry-on item and one personal item. Personal items include handbags, umbrellas, walking sticks, crutches, coats, cameras, reading matter, infant food, briefcases, and laptop computers. No carry-on item may exceed overall dimensions of 55 inches (Height + Length + Width) and must fit under the seat or in the overhead bin.

For each fare-paying customer, AirTran Airways allows two (2) checked pieces, with size limitations. The maximum weight is 70 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height).

Excess baggage will be charged at the rate of $50 for each piece checked there after. Oversize and overweight baggage, with some limitations, will be accepted for a fee of $65 per piece.

For further details on baggage, as well as information about military baggage, pets, and sporting equipment, please visit our Baggage Information page. Or call AirTran Airways Reservations at 800-AIRTRAN.

What security restrictions are in place for carry-on baggage?
Knives or sharp objects will not be allowed in carry-on baggage or past the security checkpoint. Any sharp items you may need in your travels, such as shaving razor, scissors or nail clippers, should be packed in your checked baggage. Customers dependent upon syringe-injected medications may carry on such items.

Are there some hazardous materials that are not allowed in baggage?
Some items are not allowed to be carried in baggage on AirTran Airways flights for safety reasons
