After days of anticipation, the new startup airline to be based out of Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport will be a resurrection of PEOPLExpress. The airline plans to launch flights this summer with fares as low as $69.
According to flypex.com, the airline plans to “bring back the joy of flying again with affordable non-stop service to markets without current non-stop service or with current expensive regional jet service – a result of the consolidation and pull-back of major air carriers.”
The startup carrier plans to start with 12 daily departures on single-class 158-seat Boeing 737-400 aircraft, increasing to 25 departures within “a few years”. Announced cities to be serviced included Boston, Orlando, Newark, Pittsburgh, Providence, and West Palm Beach, FL.
The airline is hoping to win over travelers with low fares, no baggage fees for the first two bags, and no seat assignment fees. “Our goal is to make flying fun again,” PEOPLExpress COO Mike Morisi says in a release announcing the new airline.
As for the reasoning behind choosing Newport News, PEOPLExpress explains: “As a Mid-Atlantic base of operations, the Hampton
Roads area is ideally situated in an area with few air traffic issues, mild climate, and favorable economic conditions.”
